Exclusive Insider Content Just for You Urinetown the Musical won three Tony Awards during its first run on Broadway last decade including one for score and book. As David Auburn writes, “Though Urinetown mocks the convention of musicals, it is not primarily a spoof of them, as many reviews have held it to be (actually, it has the most solid, old-fashioned construction of any book musical in recent memory). If it is any kind of satire, it’s not of musical theater but of human corruption.” It altered the notion of what a Broadway musical could be and it is altering the notion of what a Warehouse Theatre show can be as well. With The Warehouse kicking its 43rd season into high gear with this musical, we found it only appropriate to embrace the “Brechtian” notion of the show, and let the audience experience the theatre “working” in its entirety. What does that mean? It means that we’ve stripped the theatre of all its curtains (or “soft goods” as we call them) and are using the theatre space from wall to wall to wall to wall. Even the tech gallery is in play for this show, so you’ll see tons of entrances, exits, costume changes, etc. during the show’s progress. Perhaps as an audience member you will get lost in the drama and comedy of the lives before you or perhaps, like Brecht would wish…you’ll become “detached” from the scene and reflect on your own lives and world. Either way, the journey is ours to take together. The scenic design by Shannon Robert puts you, the audience member, right into the middle of the action. With various levels of seating including cabaret tables, the action of the musical will take place in front, beside, and above the audience. It is surely to be a musical experience like no other at The Warehouse. Included below are sketches from costume designer, Allison M. Steadman and photos of Shannon’s paint texture you’ll see on Amenity #9 during the show.
