Sex Ed:  The Education & Oversexualization of Our Country

As the Internet and technology speeds up the learning curve for everyone in America, people are encountering sexual situations and educational scenarios that never occurred in the 1990s let alone the decades before the 90s. As sex continues to flood our screens, books, schools…one question continues to rise to the top: Who’s going to teach my kids? Join us as we explore potential solutions on how to allow our kids to grow healthily and to know fact from fiction, abuse from consent, and how to find support in an ever confusing world.

Featuring a Forum panel of Mike Quint – Certified Sexual Risk Avoidance Specialist and Abstinence Educator at Live Free Inc., Dr. Melisa Holmes – OBGYN and Co-Founder/Vision Keeper of Girlology, Meghan Meier – Senior Director and Consultant with Pure Romance, and Esther Hall – mother of two (ages 10 and 14) who also happens to be Michelin Events / Facilities Coordinator.

Moderated by Jonathan Parker, Director of City Involvement from Fellowship Greenville.

Free and Open to the Public as always.

Dr. Melisa Holmes is a mom, physician, author, and Founder of Girlology & Guyology (www.girlology.com), a national physician-led sexuality education platform that provides parent-child programs, a web community, and a series of books for youth. Girlology & Guyology started in 2003 as a local “hobby,” but has experienced a national expansion into 20 states where community based programs target children ages 8-12 and their parents with age-appropriate, medically accurate puberty and sex education. Dr. Holmes is an Associate Professor of Ob-Gyn and Pediatrics at the University of SC School of Medicine in Greenville. As an advocate for adolescent health, she has served on the Adolescent Healthcare Committee for the American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists and continues to serve on the board of Directors for the SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. She is also on the Advisory Board for Amaze.org, a global project that uses young animators to create age appropriate, inclusive sexuality education videos for youth age 10-14. She speaks to national audiences about adolescent health and sexuality education, and she serves as a medical consultant to Procter & Gamble’s Femcare Division. Locally, she was a TEDxGreenville presenter with her talk titled “Eight is Great” for talking to kids about sex. According to her three daughters, her greatest accomplishment is being quoted in the Cosmo Snapchat Story. Her husband doesn’t understand Snapchat but thinks she’s a great cook.

Mike Quint is a certified Sexual Risk Avoidance Specialist (SRAS) and an Abstinence Educator at Live Free Inc., a non-profit sexual risk avoidance education provider in Greenville County. He is also working toward his Masters in Christian Thought at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC, where he has studied issues in sexual ethics from a Christian worldview. He is married to his lovely wife, Tara, and they are expecting their first little one this August.

Esther Hall is the Events Coordinator for Michelin North America and on the Leadership Team for the Business Resource Groups, as well as a Purpose Ambassador with the Michelin Purpose Team. Esther embraces non-convention, so much so that she decided to have her daughter Ava before finishing school or holding a career job. It only took her eleven short years to obtain her undergraduate degree, while working and raising her children. Shortly after obtaining her Masters Degree in International Business in 2013, Esther entered the real life movie entitled Single-Parenting a Pre-Teen Junior High Girl. She got five star reviews. In her free time, she enjoys pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.

Meghan Meier started her Pure Romance journey in May of 2011 after an unexpected layoff. With a background in musical theatre, a degree in non-profit management and a heart for service, she quickly realized that Pure Romance was the best way to utilize all her talents to earn a steady income. Named one of Greenville’s Best & Brightest Under 35 in 2014, she plays an active role in her community serving on the City of Greenville Arts in Public Places Commission, volunteering as a mentor for The Frazee Center and is involved with the Pulse Young Professionals. She has served 4 terms on Pure Romance’s President’s Club and is currently serving her first term on the Pure Romance Board of Directors. She proudly leads the Southern Romantics team out of Greenville, South Carolina.
